The lecture with numerous video examples deals with the aesthetic as well as thematic development of the music video format. The focus is on current music videos from Africa, which show a playful-ironic handling of cultural symbols of tradition. These videos are supplemented, contrasted and contextualized with videos from Europe and the USA, which prismatize or break both their own and foreign cultural symbols of tradition. What possibly emerges here is a new understanding of tradition, which sees itself as a re- as well as disrespectful transformation of traditions.

The lecture was originally conceived by Cornelia Lund and Holger Lund for “Acud Macht Neu” (Berlin, Sept. 2014) and now expanded to include more recent examples. With thanks to Thomas Burkhalter (Norient).
