Paul McNeil is a typographic designer, visual researcher, writer and educator.
In 2009, with Hamish Muir, he co-founded MuirMcNeil, a design collaborative focussed on developing both independent research projects and commercial commissions. MuirMcNeil’s work explores the use of systematic methods in editorial design, brand identity, type design and moving image.
McNeil has extensive experience in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching, having worked for many years as a Senior Lecturer in Typography at the London College of Communication where he was Course Director of the MA Programme in Typographic Design. He regularly delivers lectures, workshops and short courses to national and international institutions and groups.
Seven years in the making, The Visual History of Type, McNeil’s exhaustive survey of Western type from 1450–2015, was published in 2017, and Letters from M/M (Paris), his monograph on the renowned French studio’s type and letterforms, in 2022.
