Low-frequency sound can touch bodies and offer a vibrational corporal experience. Invisible to the eye, yet immediately noted by the body, the sonorous touch embraces bodies and spaces. These long sound waves are capable of filling the air with pressure while caring about the bodies. To feel touched and hugged by sound waves. Our skin feels, and our body listens to this unique sound massage enabled by low-frequency sound waves and subwoofers. The invisible touch of sound.

In a lecture with a subsequent concert performance she will introduce us to her research and her experiences, including subjects like sub-bass as sonic medium and as therapeutic medium, being creative and a woman in a male dominated field, the research partnership with companies, especially with d&b audiotechnik.

Stefanie Egedy investigates sound as a composer of conceptual pieces, music, commissioned works, and electronic music. Currently, she is focused on researching possibilities with low-frequency sound, bodies, and subwoofers. Egedy’s artistic practice stems from installations to live performances as sonic propositions – building a body of work called BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.). Sub-bass, bass, infrasound, subwoofers, and their capacity to make themselves present in a space, are the foundations of her artistic practice. Alongside the possibilities of interaction between human/architectural bodies and sound waves, using field recordings, analog, and digital synthesis. Besieged by this scenario, Egedy articulates the cross-over between sonorous and musical language to investigate sonic communication between beings.

Furthermore, Egedy co-runs the label COISAS QUE MATAM (THINGS THAT KILL), researches the relations between light and sound with Camille Laurent, and has worked with Chris Salter on his latest spatial production; whilst a former academic investigation of the political impacts of social and technological acceleration during a bachelor’s in Public Administration and Philosophy resonates with the work.

Stefanie Egedy has worked with- and exhibited in places such as CTM Festival (Berlin), KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), Berghain (Berlin), Kunstfest (Weimar), The Fairest at Trauma Bar (Berlin), Zentrale (Vienna), Patchlab Festival (Krakow), Museu de Arte Moderno (Buenos Aires), MIS – Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo), Mamba Negra party (São Paulo) and Festival Novas Frequências (Rio de Janeiro) and is part of the European Commission’s Creative Europe-supported SHAPE+ 2022-2023 artist roster.
