MAKE IT MAKE SENSE brings together works that make social, technological, environmental and cultural changes the subject of design. Together, they demonstrate the extent to which the remit of design today extends far beyond traditional questions of form and function. An exhibition design consistently geared towards reusability provides a common framework for the various perspectives. The accompanying programme further fosters dialogue between higher education, culture and business. The discussion »Gestaltung ist eine Form der Erkenntnisproduktion« on Design Perspectives offers a more in-depth perspective.

Around 500 projects from various design disciplines and 28 state universities were submitted to German Design Graduates this year. 71 final-year projects were selected for this year’s annual exhibition. We are delighted that three graduates from our degree programme are represented amongst them.

  • Arne Becker – ‘nothing reminds me of you’
An experimental short film translates grief into an open, atmospheric visual language, whilst doing away with dialogue. Rather than conveying the emotion in a straightforward manner, it leaves room for personal interpretations and memories – and explores how an inner state can be made visually tangible.
  • Jette Bödige – ‘/DA UNTEN’
A large-scale research archive explores shame as a personal experience and a social instrument. The artist’s own research, alongside contributions from other creators, reveals how language, images, products, laws and body images collectively shape what appears to be a private emotion within society.
  • Linus Fritz – “Komprimat”
An interactive installation demonstrates how algorithmic systems translate identity into fixed categories and preconceptions. The image of the visitors is compressed in three stages, from a recognisable figure to a data form, allowing visitors to experience the loss of individual complexity.
