How does the body respond to bass? What is it about low frequency sound that is so visceral and entrancing – viceral vibrations emanating from bulky subwoofers that are designed to be not only heard, but primarily felt. A focused sensory presence in time and space becomes the primary tool of perception that resists neoliberal norms of hyper-acceleration and the emphasis on the visual. Sound artist Stefanie Egedy has dedicated her work to the study of low frequency sound, exploring its physical, aural, and aesthetic ramifications through building a compendium of work called »BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS« (B.A.S.). In this article, together with the researcher Holger Lund she investigates bodies and bass as co-creative agents in sensory and spatial dynamics, proposing new compositional methodologies that situate low frequency sound work in the realm of Post-Music.
