What is the cost of digital publishing? How is a versatile publishing project financed? What is bootstrapping? What are the unexpected complexities of managing an online store? What are the pros and cons of community building? Books versus e-books? What is the role of print on demand in book publishing? English versus another language; what difference does it make? Esen will discuss the aforementioned questions within the experience of Manifold, a publishing undertaking and an online cultural criticism journal, celebrating its seventh year in 2023.

Esen Karol is a graphic designer based in Istanbul, who works on both digital and analog projects in her one-person studio. Esen Karol’s clients and collaborators have included Arter Space for Art, Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, Mavi, Yapı Kredi Publications, Vehbi Koç Foundation, Radikal (Doğan Media Group), Meşher and SALT. She received her master’s degree in communications design from Pratt Institute, New York, where she was a Fulbright Fellow. Her works are in the collection of Art Institute Chicago and her posters are in the collection of Museum für Gestaltung, Zurich. Her current focus is on projects relating to the online cultural criticism journal, Manifold, which she co-founded in 2016.

Esen Karol is member of the European Design Council Jury and has been appointed as designer for the Turkish Pavillon at the Biennale Architettura 2023, Venice.
